PORT OF HAIFA: 20% INCREASE CONTAINER


The port handled 12.2 million tons of cargo compared to 10.5 millions in the parallel period last year Haifa Port Ltd. reported last week that 1H was a record breaking period in terms of general cargo and containers moving through the port. During the first six months, the port handled 12.2 million tons of cargo compared to 10.5 millions in the parallel period last year, 18% up. The figures show 20% increase in container movement in terms of TEU. During the first six months the port handled TEU 700,000 out of which TEU240,000 were handled at the new western container terminal. Compared to last year the port experienced an increase of 7% in the number of imported containers, 2% in export and sharp increase of 63% in containers transshipped through the port. During the first six months the port's container terminals handled, on average, TEU 115,000, per week. Haim Lenzizky, the acting director general, noted that the new figures put the port as the largest Israeli maritime gateway and the largest export port of the country. He attributed the success of the port to Haifa Port’s skilled and professional staff which provides the global maritime community with the highest quality service.
